God is for me!

God is for me!

I fear that I run from statements like this too often because it hits me as being too man-centered.   I think I am elevating myself too much as I declare that God’s eyes are on me. Because our Christian bookstores have become overrun with self-help books and books that make you feel better about yourself, I try to reject any thought that would take away from a Gospel-centered, Christ-exalting, His-kingdom mindset.

However, the thought that God is for me is a biblical, Gospel-centered idea. This statement’s power is not in the “me” at the end, but in the noun at the beginning. The focus is not in what the “me” does, but in what the noun does. The praise cannot turn to the “me”, but it must go to the noun-God!

It was in Psalm 56:9 that we see this statement directed to God by King David. He says, “This I know, that God is for me!” David was afraid, and his enemies were looking to destroy him, but he knew this one thing…God was for him.

When you think of God being for you there is two ways you can picture it. One is placing you as some “rock-star” and God being some type of “super-fan” of yours and being for you because you are so amazing. This type of picture and view would only bring pride and a false view of God and yourself. A correct view would be a family going to the inner-city and finding a homeless man and feeding him, clothing him, finding him a job and telling him that they are for him. This act is not expected or even deserved. It is only done because of the love in the family’s heart that allowed them to reach out and touch such an insignificant person and show him that they are for him. The attitude this would bring in the homeless man is humility and gratitude, for he knows he does not deserve this act of kindness.

Do you see how God is for you? You don’t deserve it. We are not superstars with a God that stands amazed in our presence. It does not make sense for the God of the universe to be for us. He gains nothing from it. Just like that family gains nothing from the homeless man.

Maybe you ask, “How is God for us?”
I will not expound on them, but here is a just a short list of ways that I see that God is for me.

-He created us in His image! (Genesis 1)
-He did not abandon me when I was born in sin. (Romans 3:23)
-He sent His Son to die in my place even before I ever showed Him love.
(Romans 5:8)
-He gave me life, when I was dead spiritually. (Ephesians 2:1-4)
-He poured mercy, grace and love on me. (Ephesians 2:4-8)
-He gave me a purpose. (Ephesians 2:10)
-He says He will never leave me or forsake me. (Hebrews 13:5)
-He says He cares for me. (I Peter 5:7)
-He says He is coming to dwell with me. (Revelation 21:1-5)

When you read a list like this the only proper attitude to have is one of humility and gratitude. It is so very clear that God is for me! All He did and is doing and going to do shows us that we don’t serve a God that sits in the heavens and watches the world and time pass by. NO! He is a God that is intimately acquainted in all our ways (Psalm 139:3).

I don’t know what you are going through as you read this blog, but if you are a child of God then know that God is for you! He is there to help you and walk through every trial with you! He does not always remove the hard times we walk through, but He does promise to walk with us through them.

Will you say along with David today? “This I know…. God is for me!”
